Senior Perry Stormaire steps out on Prom night, at his father's bequest, with Lithuanian exchange student Gobija Zaksauskas driving his dad's red jag and well, all hell breaks loose. Very short chapters makes this fast and action packed read even faster. The back flap touts this novel as "Ferris Beuller meets La Feeme Nikita". I can't top that- right on. Light, entertaining but also thought provoking due to the 39 instructions at the beginning of each chapter: real or imaginary college admissions essay questions which will remind you of this novel long after you've finished reading. Promising debut. Ages 14+ Maria E. Gentle.

Forced to take a duty-date to the senior prom, Perry's big night turns wildly violent when Gobi, a foreign-exchange student, reveals that her evening's agenda includes assassinating five New York men . . . and that Perry will act as chauffeur.

Positive Comments:

  • This humorous book is fun to read.
  • The body of the book contains instructions.
  • The college essay topics beginning each chapter seem outrageous, but teens have seen these same topics on actual college applications.

Observations:

  • Teen readers, including teen boys, have liked the book.

Concerns:

  • In the first few pages, the author misuses the word “literal.”
  • Would the college essay questions turn off younger age readers?
  • The story seems too “movie ready” with its video game violence.
  • The character is redeemable, but actions throughout do not support this unexpected ending.
