MacLeod Andrews does a marvelous job bringing the non-reading Charlie Joe Jackson to life. In his capable hands, Charlie Jo comes off as a funny, goofball middle schooler on an ill-advised mission to defend his right not to read. Well worth a listen and a chuckle is guaranteed. One very minor hiccup in the production is that Shel Silverstein is mentioned and the narrator pronounces it Silver-"stine" not "steen." Joan Kindig

Trading ice-cream sandwiches for book reports, wheeler-dealer Charlie Joe has managed to get to middle school without ever reading an entire book.  Once his scheme is discovered, he's forced to write his own book over summer vacation. He then produces this hilarious how-to-avoid reading guide.  MacLeod Andrews' narration, which brings out Charlie's goofball humor, will delight reluctant and eager readers alike. Ages 9 to 12

Positive Comments:
  • Point of view works in this funny story.
  • The voice perfectly aligns with that of a clearly middle-school student.
Observations:
  • This audio illustrates the irony of listening to a book about not reading.
Concerns:
  • The voice can be bothersome at first, but it soon fits both the character and the story.
