What happens when a 14 year old asthmatic wakes up in the body of a "jock" tough guy named Flip and no one believes him. This is a story about identity, belonging, friendship, all things that have strong appeal to y/as. The writing is subtle and the story believable. Edie Ching (This title will appear on the April agenda.)

In this fast-paced adventure, Alex wakes up in the body of a boy named Flip. Now he needs to find out what happened to his own body in order to attempt switching back.

Positive Comments:
  • The author captures attention with the in medias res beginning, and the story makes readers wonder how much is real.
  • Flip’s family is well-drawn.
  • The writing clearly reveals the speaker even though it could have been very confusing.
  • A good addition is the dog as the great disbeliever.
Observations:
  • The story presents a changeling in a different way.
Concerns:
  • Even though the kids are 14, some of their actions make them seem like they should have been 16.

I think there is a way that we can accept early nominations like this one but still keep them out of the list of currently nominated titles.  I'm in touch with Adriana to see what she says about how we can do this.  -Caroline
